Director Mike Mills latest feature, 20th Century Women, makes its worldwide premiere as the Centerpiece gala of the New York Film Festival on October 8th. The film is a comedy set in Santa Barbara 1979; it follows a single mother who raises her troubled teenage son in a non-traditional way, as she seeks out help from two women in her life. 20th Century Women features acclaimed stars Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup.
“Although the movie is set in the late ‘70s, Mike really didn't want a 'retro' grade,” MPC LA Colorist/Creative Director Mark Gethin explained. “He was very keen to have a contemporary feel to the film. It was about grading each scene with a certain contrast and richness that complimented the light and art direction rather than replicating a certain period of time.”
In discussing their long standing relationship, director Mike Mills says, "I love working with Mark on all my work, and especially on something that demands as much attention to detail as a feature film. Mark just has a great eye and knows how to amplify shots and scenes while always feeling naturalistic and un-worked. He’s always sensitive to what I’m hunting for, and just makes it look easy - which it isn’t."
20th Century Women hits theaters on December 25th. Click here to watch the trailer.
